When the long winter nights come to an end and the summer arrives, Helsinki starts to celebrate, and always in style. Festivities begin with the Feast of St John, when bonfires are lit to honour the midnight sun, but the real fun starts with the generously programmed Helsinki Festival.
The programme consists of classical and contemporary music, dance, theatre, popular and world music, cinema, performance and art exhibitions. There is a special Children's Festival, and a Night of Arts where tens of thousands of people take part in various events. The programme is wide-ranging: galleries are open until midnight, music is played in parks and churches, dance groups and orchestras perform on street corners.
As always the Huvila Festival Tent becomes a hub, with artists from all over the world taking to the stage. For further details of the programme, please visit the festival website.
