Hakaniemi Market Hall, in the Kallio district, shows visitors a slice of Helsinki life that they may otherwise miss. The market's Upper Hall, located immediately above the food hall, is crammed with bargain textiles, woollen goods, art supplies and plenty more.
The market is not as pretty, or centrally located, as the charming tourist favourite in Market Square. Instead, it sits at a busy crossroads in the city's traditional blue-collar stronghold. This is where day-to-day people get their provisions and get on with their lives - which makes it all the more interesting to visit.
Interwoven with the standard meat, cheese, vegetable, baked goods and sweets stalls are health and natural food stalls, florists and exotic offerings from the Middle and Far East, including a variety of alternative snacks to eat. Be careful of the section devoted exclusively to bread and baked goods: this means seriously rumbling stomachs and an irresistible urge to eat every loaf.
Another feature that sets the building apart is its upper hall. Located immediately above the food hall, it's stuffed with textiles, woollen goods, art supplies and loads more. A guaranteed bargain area.
