Step back in time at the Russian Villa Tomtebo - there's always something going on to keep you entertained, if the flowers in the garden won't do.
Architect Gustav Karl Nyström originally designed the villa as his summer house in 1893. Famed as the last representative of the "Modern Renaissance" in Finland, prior to its independence in 1917, his main works in Helsinki are the House for Public Records of the State, the House of Estates and the Museum of Industrial Arts. He also designed the Students' House in Tampere and the Art Museum in Turku.
Now owned by the city, the ground floor of this charming villa is used during the summer for exhibitions of Finnish and Finno-Ugrian folk art and tradition. The restaurant there is also carving a decent name for itself and if you do grab some food make sure you enjoy it in the garden outside, where the stage is used for folk dance performances and concerts.
The villa also loans traditional Finnish costumes, so if you happen to be invited to a fancy dress party....
