Panchimalco, a small town in the San Salvador city region, honours its two patron saints every year with the spectacularly colourful Flower and Palm Festival, La Fiesta de las flores y palmas de Panchimalco.
Panchimalco is woken to music at 4am on the first Sunday in May every year. Images of the Virgen del Rosario and the Virgen de Concepción are carried on altars through the town, adorned with all types and colours of flowers and palms.
The streets are dotted with multi-coloured paper globes and women and children in typical costume pay homage to the saints through swirling dances. Regional sweets, yuca and toasted plantain are just a few of the local specialities to munch on.
