Featuring a rich collection of exhibits ranging from prehistoric times to the present, the Nubia Museum is a result of the Nubian Rescue Campaign, a UNESCO-led project that salvaged items from the 1960s inundation caused by the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
The museum's permanent exhibition is made up of around 1500 artefacts, among which are stunning 6000-year-old painted pottery bowls, the granite head of King Shabatka and the quartzite statue of a priest of the Kushite dynasty. There are also fascinating displays tracing the working life and skills of the Nubian people, such as an early irrigation system and a model of a Nubian house.
The architecture of the museum, designed by Mahmoud al-Hakim and Pedro Vasquez Ramirez and winner of the 2001 Agha-Khan Award, evokes a traditional Nubian village on the Nile as it was before the region was flooded.
