Spooky and kitsch, the Catacombs of Kom el-Shuqafa in Alexandria were dug in the 2nd century AD by a wealthy family that still practiced the Ancient Egyptian religion.
The decorations are unique - ancient Egyptian funerary motifs in Greco-Roman style. A spiral staricase runs through the three-level complex, featuring a labyrinth of tombs, various objects and the famous Triclinium, where relatives would make offerings to the dead. The site is also home to the Central Tomb, containing the 2nd century AD statues of Sobek and Anubis wearing Roman armour.
