Copenhagen's Tivoli Gardens offer a mix of plant displays, live (and free) entertainment and more than 20 funfair rides, including the fastest roller coaster in Denmark - with three loops and a top speed of 80km/h.
Opened in 1843, the park still observes the original agreement that three-quarters of its area should be dedicated to open space, ensuring that the colourful gardens remain as much an attraction as the more contemporary white-knuckle rides.
Tivoli is also justifiably proud of its dedication to free entertainment, with an abundance of shows that catch the eye. Circus acts, clown shows and pantomime performances provide fun for the family, while for adults there is a wide selection of cabaret, comedians, discos, live jazz and the celebrated Tivoli Symphony Orchestra. The summer season kicks off justifiably early: check out their excellent website for a wealth of ideas.
Tivoli also boasts a cluster of restaurants, cafes, snack bars and food stands ranging from some of Copenhagen's finest gastronomic experiences to the ever-popular hotdogs. Their fireworks displays are legendary, and usually take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 11.45pm.
