The history of Denmark is portrayed at the National Museum, in Copenhagen K. Beginning in prehistoric times 14,000 years ago, the collection includes Eskimo exhibits and a coin collection. The Great Hall of the 18th-century palace is hung with tapestries.
The Prehistoric Denmark section shows a number of archaeological finds including the Solvognen (The Sun Chariot) from Trundholm, a bronze cult figure from about 1400 BC depicting the sun being drawn across the heavens by a horse. Other highlights include runic stones from Jutland and Lolland as well as a unique exhibition of oak coffin burials from the Bronze Age.
Other sections cover Denmark's Middle Ages and Renaissance, Denmark 1660-1830, The Royal Coin Collection and the Antique Collections, with mummies and other artefacts from Egypt, Greece and Rome. The Ethnographic Collection explores cultures from the Indians to Eskimos.
The children's museum functions both as an independent experience and as an introduction to the museum's other exhibitions. Kids get to sail in a Viking ship, sit in a Danish classroom from the early 20th century, enter a medieval castle and much more.
Please note that the Prehistoric collection is closed until May 2008.
