Tanec Praha (literally "Dance Prague") has been the city's major dance festival since its inception in 1989. An exciting development in 2001 was the assumption of the newly-refurbished Ponec Theatre as the festival's main venue, as well as the extension of events to other cities like Brno, Hradec Králové or Olomouc.
Over its decade and a half Tanec Praha has brought to the Czech Republic such world-beating companies as the Nederlands Dans Teater/2 and the UK's Siobhan Davies Dance Company (for the first festival in 1989), Australia's Perth City Ballet, Lyon Opera Ballet, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company, Bill T Jones, Trisha Brown, DV 8 physical theatre, Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Twyla Tharp, Taipei Dance Circle, Ballett Frankfurt and the Icelandic Dance Theatre, and that's just scratching the surface of the wide reach of the event.
