The permanent art collection at Prague Castle has been pillaged and plundered over the years, reflecting the changing fortunes of the Czech Republic. Nevertheless, there are some famous names in the historic Picture Gallery and it remains the most impressive collection of Old Masters (and lesser-known talents) in the city.
Highlights of the collection are Titian's Young Woman at Her Toilet, Tintoretto's Flagellation of Christ and Rubens' The Assembly of the Olympic Gods. There are also fine works by European artists Hans von Aachen, Domenico Fetti, Bartolomeo Spranger, Paolo Veronese and Jacopo Bassano.
In recent years, there has been an effort to build up the Czech collection - works by Petr Brandl, Jan Kupecky, Norbert Grund, Josef Manes, Adolf Kosarek, Jaroslav Cermak, Vaclav Brozik, Mikolas Ales, Vojtech Hynais, Antonin Chitussi, Jan Preisler, Antonin Slavicek and others span the last three centuries.
In addition to the permanent collection, the castle also organises temporary art and heritage shows.
