Eight days before the Greek Orthodox celebration of Easter, the townspeople of Larnaca celebrate the feast day of their patron saint, St Lazarus, with a lively procession.

The icon of Saint Lazarus, normally kept in the Church of St Lazarus, is taken in procession through the streets, led by the priest, who gives a service before setting off from the church.

Saint Lazarus, who was raised from the dead by Jesus, reputedly came to Cyprus after his adventures in the tomb, where he was ordained Bishop of Kition (Larnaca's ancient name) by Saints Barnabas and Paul.
