The Nicosia Race Club is the only organisation in Cyprus authorised to organise horse races in Cyprus and accept pari-mutuel bets on them. Major races include the Cyprus Derby Cup and the Cyprus Turf Club Cup, both of which are for three year-old colts and geldings over a distance of 2250m.
Throughout the year, two to four year-olds race over a distance ranging from 1000m to 2450m. The prize pool starts at CY£8,500 and climbs as high as CY£30,000 with the major races.
Horse racing was revived in Cyprus from the end of the 19th century. In winter and spring, races take place most Wednesdays and Sundays. In summer and autumn, they take place on Saturdays and Wednesdays. Special races are run on other days too, and each meeting hosts ten races.
