The medieval town of Motovun stages its own film festival every year. Open-air screenings in beautiful surroundings and awards for independent film-makers keep young cinephiles coming back for more.
The festival in Istria focuses on films from countries not renowned for their film industries, and even has an award named "From A to A", which aims to promote the distribution of films made in the region from Albania to Austria outside their home turf. Other awards include The Propeller - the festival's main prize, given by the jury to the best film in the programme; an online award; an audience award; a Human Rights Film Award and finally an award given by the association of international film critics, FIPRESCI.
The eco-camp set up for the festival attracts hordes of young film fans and is the reason the event has been nicknamed "film Woodstock" by journalists.
