Tucked neatly into the Bay of Kvarner, Krk, with an area of 405 square km, is the second largest island in the Adriatic after Cres. The island connects to mainland Croatia via a two-arch bridge, one of the longest in the world.

Home to the Griffon Vulture, Krk's proximity to southern Germany and northern Italy makes the island a popular holiday destination, the main resort areas being Baska, Malinska, Omisalj, Vrbnik, Punat and Krk Town, famous for St. Mary's Cathedral, the seat of the Krk bishopric.

Krk enjoys a rich history, and has historically been a centre of Croatian culture. During the Roman Civil War, the Bay of Curicta was the scene of sea combat between the fleets of Caesar and Pompey. A thousand years later, Krk became the centre of the Vegilot dialect of the Dalmation language, whilst the oldest preserved text in Croatian is thought to have been created and preserved on the island.
