Zhangjiaje National Forest Reserve
|
Meet nature head-on at the remarkable Zhangjiaje Forest nature reserve, where the number of flora species doubles that found in Europe. Trees and plants thought to be extinct continue to pop up here and there and the fauna quota is just as spectacular, with giant salamanders and monkeys amongst the wildlife in the area.
Called Wulingyuan, the reserve has UNESCO World Heritage Listing - meaning sound walking trails, rubbish bins and a total fire ban. The forest is immense, green, misty, mysterious and ancient.
A popular base for exploring this vast wilderness is Zhangjiaje. It is also possible to stay at Suoxi Village, from where whitewater rafting tours are offered between the reserve's green canopy and craggy peaks. As Wulingyuan is actually 370 square kilometres in size, there are plenty of trekking and exploring options and you may well find that one day is just not enough.
