The Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games begin 12 days after the Olympic Games draw to a close. More than 4000 athletes compete for the coveted gold medals across a range of 20 sports, from archery to wheelchair tennis.

The event is designed to highlight the achievements of the disabled community within the sporting world. The participants are an inspiration to watch as they overcome illnesses and difficulties to succeed in team games and individual sports.

The 2008 proceedings kick-off with a spectacular ceremony on 6 September, followed by an intense 12-day competition schedule. The 400-plus events take place in venues across Beijing and also in two other Chinese cities. Hong Kong hosts the equestrian events, while sailing takes place in Qingdao.
