The Day of the Holy Cross sees some elaborate posturing among the opposite sexes. Like the Fiesta of the May crosses in Spain, Oruro (and other towns in Bolivia) decorate the Plaza de Armas and surrounding streets with coloured streamers and beautifully-decorated crosses made of flowers.
The crosses become a hive of activity for traditional dancing and music. In some areas women denote their status by waving flags. It is up to the men to impress them with their skilful dancing techniques and fine costumes. Come and judge for yourself whether they are successful.
