Bruges was a leading commercial centre in the 13th and 14th centuries, with a population equivalent to that of London. This period of dominance has brought some stunning medieval architecture to Bruges' old town, some incredibly well preserved.
Look out for the Onze Lieve Vrouwekerk (Church of Our Lady), whose brick spire - at 122 metres - is Europe's highest brick building, the Beguinage and the Heilig Bloed Basiliek (Basilica of the Holy Blood).
