The Beguine movement was a religious movement thought to be a response to the growing aspirations of the regular clergy. Beguines lived like regular nuns, but did not make the same binding vows that nuns normally made.
With very few beguines still alive this convent was turned into a monastery for Benedictine sisters who still live here. It is a sanctuary in the city and was famously painted by Winston Churchill.
