Built by Prince Mohammed Azam in 1678 as a Mughal palace fortress, Lalbagh Fort was never finished as his vice-royalty came to an end. It was the scene of a bloody battle during the 1857 war of independence, when 260 sepoys (native soldiers) stationed here revolted against the British. Today visitors can see the tomb of Pari Bibi (Fairy Lady), Lalbagh Mosque, the Audience Hall and the Hammam of Nawah Shaista Khan, which houses a museum.
