Nassau's Straw Market has been a popular tourist attraction for many years. Bahamian women sell handmade woven baskets, hats and valises - all made from straw, reeds and grass. You can also get your hair braided with beads, Bahamian-style.
Bahamian women have long plaited and decorated dried palm and sisal plant leaves, making bags, dolls and other items. Straw vending grew rapidly in popularity after the fall of the sponge industry in the 1940s and is now considered one of the country's oldest industries.
Sadly, a huge fire in 2001 burnt down the building where the market was housed. The market lives on in a large tent, approximately two blocks away from its original premises.
