The tiny village of Filzmoos, south of Salzburg, is the ultimate location for high-profile ballooning. Every January since 1980 teams from all over the globe have made the pilgrimage to the Salzburger Sportwelt Amadé ski resort for this festival.

Two main factors account for Filzmoos' status as a pilgrimage site for balloonists - the challenging winds off the surrounding mountains and the fact that enthusiasts can take off from the middle of the village.

The event draws thousands of people from the pistes to Filzmoos and it's not hard to see why. The highlight of the event is the Night of Balloons on the second evening from 6pm where a flurry of balloons lights up the night's sky.
