The annual International Choir Competition, held at Porcia Castle in the otherwise quiet surroundings of hilly Carinthia, brings together up to 12 choirs from Europe and overseas for a four-day festival of song.
Truly a "celebration of the voices", the little town of Spittal has hosted this legendary choir contest for over 40 years. Since 1964, more than 400 groups from all over the globe have participated in the competition. It is well worth a visit, as the excited and passionate crowd have made past festivals a truly uplifting experience.
Each year, between 60 and 80 choirs apply for participation, but only ten or so are lucky enough to be chosen to compete before the eager public and the merciless jury. Each chorus plays to their strengths and individual heritage, so that audiences have a sense of a musical journey through the participants' places of origin.
This multinational event is a highlight of Spittal's summer cultural programme and the final Sunday night concert is given over to the presentation of the prizes and a performance by the winning choir.
