Celebrating the end of harvest, the village of Lungötz in Annaberg hosts the world's biggest Hay Parade, highlight of the HayArt Festival. Larger-than-life hay figures are paraded through the village on decorated floats pulled by Norican horses and vintage tractors.
A great deal of imagination, concentration and skill are employed in the art of hay sculpture and the results are impressive. Weeks before the event, artists and locals gather to pour their fantasy into giant hay figures, which are constructed on wooden frames and can reach up to four metres in height.
From lions to lederhosen, the diverse hay figures are then judged by a jury and prizes are awarded to the best. Presentation is key and the floats are decorated with hay, flowers and ribbons.
The main events take place on Sunday and include the hay parade (11am), award ceremony (3.30pm), an arts and crafts market and a hay labyrinth (11am-5pm). Live music and brass bands complete the programme.
