Kitzbühel celebrates the New Year with Fire and Music, a fiery spectacle set to the beautiful music of the Donauwaltz, facing the impressive Hahnenkamm mountain.
One hundred of the town's ski instructors shoot down the famous Hahnenkamm run in formation, then jump en masse through a metre-high wall of flame at the bottom.
Giving a local custom a modern twist, the instructors build a witch with a plaster leg, which they burn ceremoniously before the jump - in this way they hope to ward off injuries for the season. The event finishes off with a traditional New Year's firework display.
