Bregenz is different. An opera festival with two stages; a traditional opera house (the Festspielhaus), home to rare operas, and a stage under the open sky on the Seebühne (Lake Stage), where productions are given in the most spectacular fashion.

An open-air stage requires different techniques (as there is, for example, no curtain to cover changes of the scene), and the festival has become renowned for its imaginative solutions, no better than in British director Richard Jones' Millennium creations of a huge page-turning skeleton for Verdi's Un ballo in maschera (1999 & 2000), and giant postcards of Paris for his production of Puccini's La bohème (2001 & 2002).
