During the Ars Electronica Festival, Linz turns into a futuristic city. A fascinating fusion of art and science, it provides a meeting place for artists and cyber enthusiasts, a trade show for technological companies and a forum for international debate.
The festival's driving aim has been to facilitate an encounter with our future as a strategy for dealing with the present. Hence the bizarre mêlée of scientific symposia and artworks.
The centrepiece of the festival is the Prix Ars Electronica, the world's foremost prize for Cyberart - where art and science meet in the most sophisticated technology. Categories are Net Vision/Net Excellence, Interactive Art, Computer Animation/Visual Effects, Digital Musics and cybergeneration-u19 (for 18-year-olds and younger).
In all, the juries have over 2500 entries to sift through, with top prizes (the Golden Nica) of €10,000 in each category. Since the competition began in 1987, artists from more than 60 countries have taken part.
