The Whitsunday Islands off the coast of Queensland are the pleasure boat capital of Australia and home to arguably the best beach in the country - Whitehaven Beach.
The Whitsunday Islands were discovered by Captain Cook in 1770. There are 74 islands in total and the area offers superb sailing opportunities in stunning blue waters. Bareboat charters are very popular - meaning that you rent a boat without skipper, crew or provisions. Booking and security deposits (up to A$2,000) are required and you should have sailing experience. A variety of yachts and cruisers are available from charter companies in Shute Harbour and Airlie Beach. If you prefer, there are also many different boat trips and tours on offer.
The largest island in the group, Whitsunday Island, is definitely worth a visit. Its highest point, Whitsunday Peak, rises to 438 metres and camping is possible in eight areas including at beautiful Whitehaven Beach. At six kilometres, this is the longest beach in Australia and has incredibly white sand, which is 98% pure silica! Good snorkelling is possible off the southern end of the beach. If you want to camp, first get a permit from the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service Office in Airlie. Take five litres of water per person per day and a fuel stove - self sufficiency is the key to camping at locations as wonderful as this.
