After a decade of seeing in the New Year amidst Otway rainforest in Victoria, the Falls Festival founded an offshoot at Tasmania's Marion Bay in 2003. The form was the same, a three-day, two-night camping and music festival to greet the New Year. And its name? The Falls Tassie!
The Falls has become an Australian music institution, enticing visitors from all over the world to embark on an annual pilgrimage of summertime escapism.
At Marion Bay, the Main Stage hosts most of the bands as well as the "tick of the clock" celebrations up to the New Year, while the Second Stage, nestled in the trees within easy walking distance, features both international and local acts including comedy up to 8pm. With a funky range of market and food stalls, there are also Healing Fields, with drumming workshops, massage opportunities or just the chance to chill out under the trees!
The Falls Festival operates a strict policy of "no BYO" (no bring your own) - no kids under 12, animals, alcohol, illegal substances, flares, fireworks, explosives, sparklers, glass, BBQs, gas bottles, couches, bats or weapons. Vehicles on site are allowed no pass-outs.
The 2007/2008 line-up includes Kings of Leon, Groove Armada, Paul Kelly, Midnight Juggernauts, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Waifs, Built to Spill, Gotye, José González, The Go! Team, Blackalicious, The Mess Hall, Girl Talk, Kev Caromdy, Whisky Go Go's and Neville Staple's Specials.
Full details of both Falls Festivals, welcoming in 2008, are on the Falls Festival Website.
