The Wonderland range of the Grampians National Park is one of Victoria's most stunning natural reserves. Known for its dramatic, rugged, red cliffs, rich birdlife and Aboriginal rock art, it is easily explored via scenic trails which blaze with wildflowers in spring.
Wild emus bound through the lowland areas, and Powerful Owl snooze by day in the high canopy of the forests, while nectar-feeding birds are numerous in the shrubby open woodland. To see kangaroos, head for the Zumstein picnic area. Other mammals found in the park include possums and koalas.
Eight hundred plant species have been identified in the park - 20 of them found nowhere else but here. The wildflowers are best in October.
There are many campsites accessible by car if hiking is not to your liking. They all have pit toilets, fireplaces and picnic tables. There is also accommodation in Halls Gap, where the Visitor Centre is located.
A ranger here can fill you in on the many activities available, which include cycling, abseiling, rock-climbing, canoeing, kayaking and four-wheel drive tours. They also provide detailed maps of the area.
