Australia's premier short film festival, Flickerfest tours the country after opening at Sydney's Bondi Beach Pavilion. The first stop is at the Byron Bay IQ Arts & Eco Centre.
In addition to the annual focus on Australian shorts - in which there are enough for four separate programmes - the festival offers an international competition, with entries from as far afield as Romania, Thailand and Brazil.
There are no fewer than 15 awards, from best film to best Australian short and best documentary, as well as industry awards and cash prizes.
The continued success of the festival has seen an extended opening stint at Sydney, before the best of the festival is toured over the coming three months across Australia, to Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Alice Springs, Adelaide, Canberra and other regional centres. In 2002 the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (home of the Oscars ®) officially recognised the event as a qualifying festival for the Best Short film and Best Animation Oscars ®.
