Eungella is Queensland's largest national rainforest park and covers almost 500 square miles of forest-clad mountains in the Clarke Range, with its highest point at Mount Dalrymple reaching 1280 metres. The name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning "Land of the Clouds."
The area has developed in isolation for thousands of years and is home to several forms of life that exist nowhere else: a bird - the Eungella honeyeater, a lizard - the orange-sided skink, a tree - the Mackay tulip oak - and three types of frog. Platypuses can be spotted daily at the Broken River viewing deck at dawn and dusk - just wait patiently and quietly.
Twenty-two kilometres (14 miles) of bushwalking tracks and the Mackay Highlands Great Walk offer breathtaking views. Down the valley is Finch Hatton Gorge, where there are waterfalls, crystal clear streams, freshwater swimming holes and a picnic area, making it a popular spot.
There is a variety of accommodation available in the Eungella area, including camping areas, hostels and self-contained cabins.
