A highlight among Queensland's natural wonders is the coastal lowland rainforest at Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation.
The far north of Queensland's wet tropical zone contains pockets of amazing biodiversity. The area covers only a tiny fraction of Australia's surface area but is home to almost 40% of the mammal species, half the bird species and more than half of the butterfly species.
The rainforest reaches as far the Bloomfield River to the north and runs along the coast for around 30 kilometres. The area is renowned for its superb scenery and beautiful deserted beaches stretch both to the north and the south from the Cape. If you tire of relaxing on the beach, there is plenty of great walking in the rainforest and abundant wildlife. Guided walks are recommended.
Sea-kayaking trips are also available and the Cape Trib reef, where it is possible to go diving, is 45 minutes away by launch. Twenty-two kilometres north of Cape Tribulation is the aboriginal community of Wujal Wujal, which can only be reached by four-wheel drive.
The Daintree/Cape Trib area has accommodation to suit all pockets - from budget backpackers' hostels to self-contained units and resorts. Plan to go for more than a day, as travelling there takes time and there is plenty to enjoy.
