Since the 1960s Byron Bay has become an internationally renowned destination for surfers, hippies, backpackers and, indeed, everyone else, attracted by its laid-back atmosphere, national parks, miles of deserted beaches and good surf.
Originally a whaling station, today this is very much a young person's place, with plenty of cultural diversity, alternative therapies, clubs, restaurants and bars. It is a relaxing world of beachfront hotels, plantation house guest houses with large verandas, B&B's, apartments, cottages and cabins, hostels, caravan and camp sites. From here you can relax on the beach, ride the surf, go on nature walks, chill at a yoga centre, try some ski diving or gliding or head out on a day trip or two.
Just 3km north of Byron Bay is Cape Byron, the most easterly point in Australia. As well as the lighthouse on the rocky headland, it boasts a stunning reserve with rainforest, rugged cliffs and views of the ocean and whale watching. Also in the region are Boatharbour and Broken Head Nature Reserves, Arakwai, Brunswick Head, Mooball, Mount Warning, Nightcap and Tyagarah National Parks, as well as the Julian Rocks Marine Reserve.
