Built in 1936 to commemorate Buenos Aires' 400th anniversary, the massive obelisk sticks up out of one of the largest roads in the world, the Avenida de 9 Julio. At 67 metres high, it positively dominates the city's landscape.
The monument marks the site where the Argentinian flag was first raised. The sleek, modern landmark was designed by Alberto Prebisch.
