Buenos Aires' oldest cemetery stretches for almost six hectares through the capital's most prestigious neighbourhood. It houses the tombs of many of the leading figures of Argentinian history: leaders of the independence movement, presidents, military leaders, scientists and artists.
Eva Perón, Adolfo Bioy Casares and Facundo Quiroga are among the great people buried on this site, and accordingly their mausoleums are of an impressive calibre, works of great architects and sculptors. A whole afternoon is easily spent wandering around the fascinating stone and marble maze and comparing the well-kept tombs to those that are dilapidated and crumbling.
Giving it a surreal Alice in Wonderland atmosphere, there are almost as many stray cats in the cemetery as there are tombs.
