The vividly colourful "street museum" Caminito in La Boca is one of the most visited sites in Buenos Aires. Work by local and international artists lines the streets and there is tango music, dancing and handicraft stalls on the weekends.

This open museum stretches for 100 metres in the working class district of La Boca, a port area based on the edge of the river Riachuelo. In the 1900s it became home to numerous Italian immigrants, who built elevated housing blocks to protect themselves from the flooding and daubed them with the paint left over from their brightly coloured boats.

These decorative houses are still there, albeit in a rather dilapidated state. The area began as a railway branch line to Ensenada and was officially declared a pedestrian museum in 1959.
