Dominating St John's skyline with its white baroque towers, the Anglican Cathedral - dedicated to St John the Divine - is actually the third religious building on the site. The first was built in 1683, but that succumbed to an earthquake in 1745, as did its replacement in 1843. The present stone building has stood since 1845, complete with its south-facing iron gates and lead figures of both St John the Divine and St John the Baptist, both of which were "freed" from a Napoleonic ship bound for Martinique in 1756.
